BATALLA DE PENSACOLA. BERNARDO DE GÁLVEZ

Gracias a esta batalla España recuperó la Florida, que se había adjudicado a Inglaterra mediante el tratado de Paris de 1763, retirándose, a cambio, el pais anglosajón de Manila y la Habana. En 1781, las dos potencias se encontraban nuevamente en guerra, por lo que el gobernador de la Luisiana, Bernardo de Gálvez decidió dar un golpe de mano para recuperar el territorio. Para ello reunió un ejército de 7.000 hombres con tropas venidas de Cuba, la Luisiana y otras zonas del imperio.

Después de neutralizar las defensas británicas, organizó un desembarco con la Infantería de Marina comenzando el sitio de la ciudad el 9 de marzo. Entonces Bernardo de Gálvez se embarcó entonces en el bergantín Galveston, izando la bandera de almirante y entró solo en la bahía, dando ejemplo al resto de la flota, que le siguió, comenzando a cañonear las defensas inglesas.

El dia 20 de abril desembarcaron las tropas, rindiendose la plaza el dia 8 de mayo, siendo presos el general Campbell y el almirante Chester. El rey de España, Carlos III otorgó a Bernardo de Gálvez los títulos de vizconde de Gálveston y conde de Gálvez.
