En 1785 nacía por deseo del rey Carlos III, el Archivo General de Indias, con el objeto de reunir en un solo lugar los documentos referentes a Indias, hasta entonces dispersos en Simancas, Cádiz y Sevilla. El impulsor del proyecto fue don José de Gálvez, secretario de Indias, y el ejecutor del mismo fue el académico e historiador don Juan Bautista Muñoz, cosmógrafo mayor de Indias. El espléndido edificio, la Casa Lonja de Sevilla, que se construyó en época de Felipe II sobre planos de Juan de Herrera sirve hasta hoy como sede del Archivo.
Desde 1785, y en distintas remesas, se van incorporando los fondos de las principales instituciones indianas: el Consejo de Indias, la Casa de la Contratación, los consulados, las secretarías de Estado y de Despacho hasta convertir el Archivo en el principal depósito documental para el estudio de la Administración española en el Nuevo Mundo, o, como se ha dicho hasta hacer de ello un tópico, hasta convertir el Archivo General de Indias en «la meca del americanismo».
Hoy el Archivo General de Indias conserva más de cuarenta y tres mil legajos, instalados en ocho kilómetros lineales de estanterías, con unos ochenta millones de páginas de documentos originales que permiten a diario profundizar en más de tres siglos de historia de todo un continente, desde Tierra de Fuego hasta el sur de Estados Unidos, además del Extremo Oriente español, las Filipinas: la historia política y la historia social, la historia económica y la de las mentalidades, la historia de la Iglesia y la historia del arte.
In 1785 the General File of The Indies was born for desire of the king Carlos III in order to assemble in an alone place the documents relating to The Indies till then dispersed in Simancas, Cadiz and Seville. The impeller of the project was don Jose de Gálvez, secretary of The Indies, and the executor of the same one was the academician and historian don Juan Bautista Muñoz, major cosmographer of The Indies. The splendid building, the House Strap of Seville, which was constructed in epoch of Philip II on Juan's planes of Blacksmith serves up to today as headquarters of the File.
From 1785, and in different remittances, there are joining the funds of the principal Indian institutions: the Advice of The Indies, the House of the Contracting, the consulates, the secretaries of State and of Office up to turning the File into the principal documentary warehouse for the study of the Spanish Administration into the New World, or, since it has been said up to doing of it a topic, up to turning the General File of The Indies into " the Mecca of the Americanism ".
Today the General File of The Indies preserves more than forty three thousand files installed in eight linear kilometres of racks, with approximately eighty million pages of original documents that allow to penetrate daily in more than three centuries of history of the whole continent, from Earth of Fire up to the south of The United States, besides the Spanish Far East, the Philippines: the political history and the social history, the economic history and that of the mentalities, the history of the Church and the history of the art.
