PROYECTO "BERGANTÍN GALVEZTOWN" (ESPAÑA-USA)


El Consejero de Cultura, Educación y Prensa de la Embajada de los EE.UU, Thomas R. Genton, presentó el pasado 13 de julio el Proyecto Bergantín Galveztown 1779, en el paraninfo del Instituto Internacional de España en Madrid.

El Proyecto Bergantín Galveztown es algo más que la reconstitución del mítico barco con el que se inició la toma de Pensacola en 1781. Por una parte, se trata de recordar la importante contribución de España a la Independencia de las Trece Colonias inglesas de Norteamérica. A partir de la ruptura de hostilidades con Inglaterra en 1779 la ayuda  española que dirigió Bernardo de Gálvez se manifestó en socorros esenciales a los rebeldes, desde el río Ohio hasta las costas de Virginia, y también a la flota francesa que los ayudaba.
La construcción de una réplica conjetural del bergantín Galveztown constituye la otra parte del Proyecto, en la que se han resuelto los problemas históricos y técnicos que planteaba esta reconstitución. Se ha determinado con total seguridad la identidad y las características fundamentales del "sloop-of-war" West Florida como el barco que se transformó en el bergantín Galveztown. La reconstitución del bergantín se ha servido necesariamente de las investigaciones de varios autores norteamericanos y británicos que han estudiado a los personajes que ilustran la historia del barco, entre ellos a Gálvez, Pollock, Payne, Rousseau y Gauld. Manuscritos y mapas de 1776-1783 consultados en los archivos americanos y españoles han permitido comprobar con bastante seguridad las características del Galveztown en 1781. Los documentos y planos consultados en archivos ingleses se han contrastado con las evidencias encontradas en numerosos pecios americanos de barcos similares y coetáneos para definir las formas y la arquitectura del bergantín Galveztown.
La madera para construir el barco ha sido donada por los ciudadanos de los EE.UU. entre cuyos puertos, de Galveston a la Mobila, Pensacola y San Agustin se propone navegar el nuevo Galveztown. (www. anabad.org)

RUTA QUETZAL 2011. PERÚ.

Ruta Quetzal BBVA es un programa "iniciático", "ilustrado" y "científico", en el que se mezclan cultura y aventura. Gracias a él, y a lo largo de veinticinco ediciones, más de 8.000 jóvenes europeos, americanos y de países como Marruecos, Guinea Ecuatorial, Filipinas y China han tenido la oportunidad de descubrir las dimensiones humanas, geográficas e históricas de otras culturas. 

La edición Ruta Quetzal BBVA 2011 viajará a Perú siguiendo los pasos de Baltasar Jaime Martínez Compañón, recorriendo los bosques del Río Marañón y el desierto peruano para estudiar la cultura Moche.

La Expedición continuará su ruta por España navegando por el mar Cantábrico, desde el País Vasco hasta Galicia para llegar a Extremadura y conmemorar en la ciudad de Trujillo, el Quinto Centenario del nacimiento Francisco de Orellana, descubridor del río Amazonas.

GALEÓN "ANDALUCIA" : DE SEVILLA A SHANGHAI



El Galeón Andalucía es la reproducción de un galeón español del siglo XVII de seis cubiertas diseñado por Ignacio Fernández Vial. Fue patrocinado y construido por la Junta de Andalucía y la Fundación Nao Victoria con los objetivos de promocionar el proyecto Guadalquivir Río de Historia y permanecer junto al Pabellón de España durante la Expo de Shanghai, celebrada el pasado año.

El Andalucía emula a los galeones de las flotas de Nueva España y de Tierra Firme y el Galeón de Manila, que procedentes desde puertos españoles comerciaban durante el siglo XVII con diversos puertos de América y de Asia. Llevó en su primera singladura una tripulación de 26 personas capitaneadas por el catedrático de navegación Antonio Gonzalez de la Cruz. El barco ocupa 51 metros  de eslora y 3,40 metros de calado.

ENTREVISTA AL HISTORIADOR INGLÉS JOHN ELLIOT


Sir John Huxtable Elliott (Reading, Inglaterra, 6 de junio de 1930), que firma y es habitualmente citado como John Elliott o John H. Elliott, es un eminente historiador e hispanista británico, que ostenta los cargos de Regius Professor Emeritus en la Universidad de Oxford y Honorary Fellow del Oriel College, Oxford y del Trinity College, Cambridge.

Ha recibido el Premio Príncipe de Asturias en 1996 por su contribución a las ciencias sociales, y el Premio Balzan en 1999 por su contribución a la historia de España y el Imperio español en la Edad Moderna. Sus estudios se centran en el periodo del siglo XVI y XVII, los de auge y decadencia de la Monarquía Católica, y en cómo su élite dirigente gestionó tales procesos.
